Washington Nationals Major League Ballpark

Nationals Ballpark, home of the team with the winningest 2012 regular-season record in Major League Baseball, seats 41,546 fans. It features state-of-the-art technology, including a 4,500 square foot high-definition scoreboard. It was the first major stadium in the United States to achieve LEED “Green Building” Certification.

Project Overview

Washington Nationals Major League BallparkDynamic Concepts Inc. (DCI) led a multidisciplinary team representing systems integrators, communications systems, and original equipment manufacturers for the work of engineering, furnishing, configuring, integrating and installing the “Best Practices” network architectural VoIP system. DCI was the communications prime contractor and project manager under the overall umbrella of the Clark Construction Group’s stadium construction project.

The project encompassed all aspects of Washington Nationals operations: fan seating, suites and club areas, restaurants and concessions, retail shops, ticket/box offices, staff and player areas and facilities, and owner’s suites and offices.

Beyond the stadium, the system connects to, the corporate offices of the Lerner Group team ownership, MLB and the MLB Network’s satellite location, and the team’s spring training facility at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida.

Products and Services Used

The project involved the challenge of providing 10-gigabit connections between the core redundant switches and every edge switch device. The DCI solution (Avaya, Extreme, Juniper and Meru) provided this massive amount of aggregated bandwidth, and met all other requirements, including:

  • Redundant edge to core connections,
  • Redundant connections to servers,
  • Termination and use of specified copper and fiber connections and interconnects,
  • Non-blocking switch fabric to support the bandwidth requirements,
  • N+1 redundant management modules (switch fabric) and power supplies,
  • Reduction of risk in failed edge devices not to exceed limit specified,
  • Support for video, voice, and data traffic using virtual networks,
  • Standards-based, open architecture.

DCI provided the solution within a fixed-price budget and extremely aggressive installation schedule.

The equipment used on this project was as follows:

  • Avaya VoIP System -- Redundant S8720 Media Server with Communications Manager 4.0, Modular Messaging Voicemail & Intuity Audix LXR2 system (20 ports x501 mailboxes), Meeting Exchange and Web/Audio Conferencing, Media Gateway G650 with local survivable procession, Model 9620 and 9630 IP phones, and Call Accounting.
  • Juniper Networks -- J Series WAN Routers and Firewall Routers, SSG 550 Firewalls, SA 700 VPN.
  • Extreme Networks -- Black Diamond core switches, Black Diamond Summit EDGE switches, Extreme Summit X450e-24p switches, Extreme Black Diamond 8806 core switches.
  • Meru Networks – Ticketing and box office services were established primarily through the Meru Wireless Network, and feature turnstile-less ticket admittance based on the wireless LAN, with ticket-takers using hand-held mobile devices that communicate wirelessly with a ticketing system database that can instantly check for duplication and fraud.

Meru Networks equipment also was used to provide Wi-Fi access over 100% of the stadium area with seamless roaming across the entire venue, and high-speed 802.11n access throughout the stadium's indoor and outdoor areas for those with 11n-equipped laptops and hand-held devices.
